360 Web Browser Not Coming Due to Poor TV Browsing Experience
Both the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii have web browsers and, hell, even the DS, PSP, and iPhone all allow you to browse the web as long as you’re connected to the Internet. That leaves the Xbox 360 as the odd man out; Microsoft has refused to provide gamers with the ability to surf the web on their TV through the 360, though they have developed website-specific applications for the device such as Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, and Netflix. As it turns out, the reason for not simply offering a full-blown web browser is because Microsoft sees browsing the web on a television as being a poor experience.
Aaron Greenberg, the Xbox director of product management, spoke with Edge (via CVG) recently, and when asked if a browser would be coming for the 360, he responded, “No. We really believe that the web browsing experience on TV is a poor one, and the real magic is to take those web experiences and optimize them for the living room. That’s what we did with Netflix. So, sure, you can go on the PS3 and go to Facebook and and try to navigate, but it’s an absolute nightmare.” He went on to say that there are “things I love about the PS3,” but said that Microsoft wants “the online experience to be fun and optimized for the living room.”
While there might not be a browser in the works, Greenberg did say that Microsoft will “continue to add more applications to get more richness,” but he didn’t offer up any details on what sort of applications we might see, or when.
