DS Tops Japanese Hardware Sales Charts

The latest Japanese hardware sales figures are in, and hand-held gaming continues to rule the retail landscape overseas. This week’s data from Media Create shows the DS family of handhelds edging out the PSP and PlayStation 3 as the top-selling gaming device in Japan.

DS systems sold a combined 31,255 units in Japan this week, followed by the PSP at 30,550 (1,915 of which being the PSP Go). Sony moved a respectable 25,590 PS3s, with the Nintendo Nintendo Wii lagging slightly behind at 24,344 systems sold. Lastly, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 closed out the sales chart at 2,442 and 1,531 units, respectively.

The fact that the PSP Go — considered by many to be a flop in the U.S. — nearly outsold the Xbox 360 this week ought to give you an idea of what the Japanese are looking for in a game console these days. Sales this weak look even worse when the other two non-handheld platforms both moved roughly 10 times as many systems during the same period.
