Significant Increase in Web-Connected Consoles During 2009

As you’d expect, the number of households in the United States that are connecting their game consoles to the Internet continues to increase. Between the end of 2008 and the end of 2009, the number of web-connected consoles in the U.S. increased by 64%, according to a new report by Parks Associates. The report also claims that one-third of Xbox 360 systems are being used to watch streaming online video, something that three-fourths of households with a PC-to-TV connection are also doing.

“Many households are working with devices they already have to get the connected-TV experience, which shows strong future demand for connected TVs, Web-enabled Blu-ray players, and networked digital media players such as Apple TV and Roku,” said Parks Associates’ Kurt Scherf.

“Manufacturers and service providers should examine these consumer behaviors closely, so they can match their current and future connected offerings with actual demand without pricing themselves out of the market.”
