This Day in History: Atari Invades Japan, No One Notices
On this day in 1983, American game maker Atari revealed that it would begin distributing its phenomenally popular Atari 2600 console in Japan, a move that would prove unsuccessful against stiff competition from Nintendo.
Atari, then owned by Warner Communications, was quite serious about the venture, opening an entire new Japanese subsidiary (called Atari International Nippon Inc.) and repackaging its most popular titles with unique Japanese-language packaging.
