Xbox 360 RROD Oven Fix, when all else fails

Posted by admin On April - 9 - 2010

This is an Xenon Xbox 360 fixed in my oven at 500F. There will be a shit load of smoke and angry parents so I recommend you don’t try it at home. This re-flows the solder balls on the main components with even heat. It’s a great fix if you know what you are doing. This particular board had the 0102 error which indicates a problem with the gpu’s connection. The falcon board in the corner that I flashed quickly has a weird ass string of 0’s,1’s and the occasional 3, it does not return to the rrod unless restarted. Once again do not attempt this unless you think you are bad ass enough to do it without fucking it all up and causing a house fire while blowing up all your capacitors. This is proof for all the doubters at Xbox-Scene, I know some of you do. One more thing, the other method on youtube is horribly inaccurate and dangerous. First of all the 360 has it’s case left on and the oven is not hot enough to melt the lead free solder. If anything you are going to burst caps and fuck it up more. Someone got lucky. Here’s the guide: forums.xbox-scene.com

I agree with you, i don’t have a 360 but i have a shitty HP notebook with a f’d up motherboard. Fixed it by oven reflow.

This was originally opened to mod and happened to red ring during that, how ironic. The same friend bought an elite off ebay and it had video output problems. To get it within the three year warranty we heated the warranty sticker without damaging and opened it. Then I put the end of a square head on a RAM chip and hit the other end with a hammer. Sent it in Thursday night and get this, got a brand new one back Tuesday, so like 3 business days, doesn’t get any better than that :D

Dude if you need to put your home consol in a hoven to fix it. . . don’t bother buying it.

360 fails again. It’s like the only consol who have kick ass problems. Ps3 can have some problems but are kinda rare and if you have problem with your wii it’s only because you have the hombrewchannel on it.

can’t you just use a blowdryer for the heat? i mean sure it isn’t as powerful as an oven at 500″ farenheit but if done long enough it should work

Good god I had a Xenon with that error code and I tried heat gunning to no avail. Some people said they fixed it with the oven others could not. So give it a shot, good luck.

A heat gun is only around 30$ at a hardware store, just be careful, they go 800f+, mine goes to 1000f.

Ye, It depends I think there are consoles with blue and black buttons, the 0022er I fixed was a 2005 launch model and I found em in lots of Xenons, getting blck ones is pure luck.
I pointed out in my tut as well to give the buttons an additional insulation under the primary insulation shield because the low temps that can manage to get through and wont fuck the caps up can still easily melt those buttons.
I guess the black buttons are of the same material like the plugs thats why they dont melt.

  19. YoungGeekGuy Said,

I think you will find it is the newer blue buttons that melt easily, I had no problem with the old one I used but I read newer ones have a problem with the buttons melting. I have not tried any falcons, and I have never repaired a zephyr.

    Hey.

    Great tutorial dude.
I have been working on a proper oven reflow tutorial myself for the last time have been playing around with timings and temps, different insulations n what not.
I made a video about the actual reflow with all the wrapping, temps, timings and stuff for those who feel lost at that.

I must say though that even more important than the caps is insulating the eject and sync buttons they melt at lower temps than the caps pop already, on my first I had to replace all of em. . .

Always the best option, I have a couple friends who thought it would be a good idea to clean out the dust *sighs* then it becomes my job.

  22. ludionis Said,

Didn’t take me hours to wrap mine, only about 10-15 min. Make SURE oven is hitting each temp mentioned before clocking and increasing temp. Course, best option EVER is to let Xbox do it for you (3 year warranty on RROD, free repair).

  23. ludionis Said,

I’ve fixed one, no smoke. used all cotton towels to wrap all parts of board EXCEPT GPU (left exposed top and bottom), taped with MASKING TAPE, which browns and gets the towels sticky, but that’s it. Towels were about 3 inches thick top and bottom, looked like a huge doughnut after the aluminum foil. Preheat oven to 200degrees, once preheated, put xbox in for 1 min, turn to 300 leave for 1 min, turn to 350 for 1 min, 400 for 1 min, 450 for 3 min, kill oven. DO NOT MOVE xbox for 15 min.
