How long do you have to leave it on until the GPU re-solder itself?

Use a soda can for aluminum sheet! You save money and get a very nice beverage at the same time!!! Hahhaa. Thanks for the tutorial.

this worked for me. I found all the parts I needed at Home Depot, including the .032 sheet (it is next to the “For Sale” signs). I even messed up and didn’t buy enough washers. So for 2 of the screws on the CPU I used an appropriate stack of those old red cardboard washers (opposite corners for more even pressure). I figured the GPU was more important and used all the good washers on it. Used Anatec Formula 5 for the thermal paste.

Great pointers and help. With a few bucks spent at Radio Shack and Home Depot I was able to do complete this and the 8 penny mod. The system booted on the first try with all green lights. SUCCESS! Thanks for the great help. I’m happy to be playing once again.

just wanted to put it out there you can fix hdmi units if you reball the (h)ana chip which controlls the hdmi fuction on the board and the most permenant fix is to reball the gpu and cpu and possibly hanna with lead solder because that solder dosent crack

When you say that the E74 error is fixible, just double the shim. Do you mean use 2 aluminum sheets instead of one? Cause that’s pretty thick, wouldn’t it put too much pressure on the GPU?

@pauliedapunisher permanent is impossible, but for all intents and purposes it is permanent.

@baddoggm19 why do people use rubber washers? they’re too soft and just squish out when tightened on….metal allthe way.
Posted on July 31st, 2010 at 9:16 pm
@randytheemt it’s bent or not quite straight. make absolutely sure its flat. good luck
Posted on July 31st, 2010 at 9:44 pm
@jtman04401 really? i’ve literally done hundreds without this so called issue you had, even after stacking TWO pieces of metal on top of the chip….

Well I just received an Xbox to fix that someone had tried this on.. the sheet of aluminum on top of the GPU and the board was destroyed. Just a word of caution with this if you overtighten the heatsink it can crack the GPU when you add this “heat plate” to the chip. It causes the heatsink to pull down too much in the center and can crack the chip.
