Why We Play Mario

1UP readers contemplate their love for Nintendo’s enduring mascot.

By Bob Mackey

If one video game character has withstood the test of time, it’s Mario. Despite playing second fiddle to a giant ape in his 1980 debut, Donkey Kong, everyone’s favorite Italian plumber went on to star in the world-changing NES classic, Super Mario Bros., and subsequently saved the video game industry from itself — a much greater feat than rescuing some ditzy princess.

Granted, Mario’s initial adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom wasn’t the first side-scrolling 2D platformer, but it was the first 2D side-scrolling platformer done right. It might be hard to imagine with our modern-day emphasis on realism and grit, but 25 years ago, the carefree journey of a squat, mustachioed man in overalls brought video games away from their status as a passing fad, and soon turned Nintendo into a household name. Without Mario, it’s entirely plausible that we folks of the future would treat video games with the same patronizing terms we reserve for something like air hockey. That’s a pretty big deal.

Ace Attorney Announced for iPhone

Posted by admin On May - 22 - 2010

Capcom revealed today that the Ace Attorney series will soon be making the leap from its traditional place on Nintendo’s consoles to the iPhone.

Phoenix Wright on the iPhone looks to be a port of the original Nintendo DS release, which itself began life as a Game Boy Advance game. Interestingly, the release promises “all five of the GBA classic cases,” despite the original’s fifth case being exclusive to the Nintendo DS.

The port promises a “flick interface” that takes full advantage of the touchscreen, enabling players to easily organize items. It will also be used for investigating crime scenes and presenting evidence.

Official No More Heroes 2 Lingerie Collection Launches

No More Heroes 2

Great news for all the real-life Travis Touchdowns out there: According to a listing spotted by CVG, lingerie retailer Bedtime Flirt now offers a line of women’s nighttime apparel based on the ladies of No More Heroes 2.

Superfans of Grasshopper Manufacture’s lightsaber-swingin’ Nintendo Wii titles can take their pick of three sexy outfits modeled after United Assassins Association agent Sylvia, gearhead Naomi, and Travis’ eager pupil Shinobu. The skimpy little ensembles run between £34.00 (about £50) and £75.00 (roughly £110) apiece, plus a little extra on the side for any gloves, stockings, or other accessories not included with the standard packages.

Also not included: cel-shading, Shinobu’s massive nest of grey hair, or any sense of shame.

Future PLC

Future PLC, which publishes several game magazines, has launched its annual report (via GamesIndustry.biz). While the company itself has weathered the economic storm, it seems that the games industry’s decline has had an effect on the games magazine business as well.

The company recorded an operating profit of roughly £4.3 million U.S. dollars for the period ending March 31. This is up 15% from last year, but company revenues dropped 7% for the same period. The company’s other magazine segments mostly maintained their readership, but the company’s games magazines were down a full 17% in the U.K. and 20% in the U.S.

CEO Stevie Spring called it a “difficult first half, impacted by tough comparatives and a lack of impetus in both hardware and software sales.” Spring promises investors that the company is “improving our editorial and commercial focus, we’re improving the efficiency of our games products, and we’re continuing to innovate with new products in print, online and on-console.”

Sengoku IXA

Following the proclamation by Square Enix and Yahoo that the former’s new game, predicted to be revealed today, May 21, would “make Japanese history,” guesses were all over the place as to what would actually be revealed. The official word has now come and if your guess was “a free browser-based strategy game taking place in Japan’s Sengoku era,” you’re absolutely correct!

Called Sengoku IXA, Square Enix’s new game is a free browser title developed by One-Up, with visuals created by Square Enix’s Yusuke Naora. For details on how the game actually plays, Andriasang has a write-up on how it all works. Put very simply, you build up an army and team up with other plays to expand one of 12 territories. Battles unfold over the course of three actual days, with combat being either automated or something that you control manually — it’s your choice. You’ll also earn virtual cards with five degrees of rarity; the cards are likely to be one of the ways Square Enix makes money off the game, as it looks as if they’ll be selling the cards through an online store, according to Andriasang, as well as other convenience items.

A closed beta for the game will begin on May 27. Anyone interested needs to have a Japanese Yahoo ID and has to sign up on the game’s official website by May 25.

Petitioners Crush Violent Games Ban in Germany

Fallout 3

Lawmakers in Germany have been striving for an all-out ban on the production and distribution of violent videogames for the last year or so, but, as Game Politics reports, a group of 73,000 German citizens have successfully banded together to defeat the anti-games legislation.

According to a translated story from German site Game Captain, the creator of the 73,000-signature petition was allowed to speak in front of the country’s Committee on Petitions. He argued that banning violent games would be a misstep, and that further education on games and the media would be a better goal for Germany.

The concerned petitioner apparently made a strong enough case that Dr. Hermann Kues, of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, confirmed that a change to the current videogame policy is now off the table. Who says petitions never work?

Play Pac-Man on Google’s Homepage Today and Tomorrow

Pac-Man on Google

Tomorrow, May 22, marks the 30 year anniversary of the release of Pac-Man in Japan. To celebrate the occasion, Google has altered its logo (called a Google Doodle) as it often does for various occasions, like the invention of the barcode or the Winter Olympics. While the logo you see above looks neat and might seem like a fairly standard standard way for Google to celebrate the original release of Pac-Man, it’s actually much cooler — after waiting for a few seconds or by pressing “Insert Coin” on Google’s homepage, you can actually play Pac-Man right there in your browser with your keyboard’s arrow keys.

According to TheStar.com, the game features all 256 levels — including the infamous bug on level 256 — and will be available for 48 hours, from 8AM PST today (Friday) through 8AM PST on Sunday. It’s the first interactive Doodle that Google has ever done and was created by Google senior user experience designer Marcin Wichary.

For some added fun, you can enable a 2-player mode by pressing “Insert Coin” once the game has already started and play as both Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, the latter of which you control with the WASD keys.
