The Straight Goods Review – Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Tuesday May 18th
Tuesday May 18th marked a pretty epic day in the land of video games when some of the year’s biggest titles were released. I kissed my wife and kids good-bye as I hunkered down for some serious gaming. Now with all the games released that day, there was one I completely overlooked, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Here’s my review, better late than never.
Our Prince has traveled to see his brother Malik
The story line here is that our Prince has traveled to see his brother Malik somewhere is Persia. When the Prince arrives Malik and his people are under attack by a powerful invading force. Desperate, Malik summons a mystical army thought to have belonged to King Solomon. Long story short, Malik has bitten off more than he can chew and it’s up to the Prince to defeat the mystical army, restoring his brother’s kingdom to its former glory. So far, so good.
Gameplay is exactly what you’d expect
Gameplay is exactly what you’d expect a next generation ‘Sands of Time’ game to be like. The Prince wall runs, jumps, rolls, climbs, swings and solves puzzles just like he always has. Of course, it wouldn’t be Prince of Persia without some swordplay, which feels sluggish and repetitive, as though it was an after-thought. “Hey, should we give The Prince a sword?” The only thing that’s new here is the inclusion of some powers. Back is the ability to rewind time, also The Prince use an ice wave, a trail of flame, a whirlwind power that pushes enemies away, stone armor and something called, “The Power of the Flow.” These are kind of neat little add-ons to a game that otherwise has nothing really new to offer.
The graphics are quite nice, but I feel they pale in comparison to some of the other games I played on the 18th. They don’t seem to have to polish that Red Dead or even Alan Wake have. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics aren’t bad, they’re just not great either.
Look, this game is not a winner.
Look, this game is not a winner. Maybe it has suffered my wrath a little extra because UbiSoft thought it would be a good idea to release it the same day as ‘Red Dead Redemption’. The music and sound of ‘The Forgotten Sands’ is passable and there is no multiplayer. There really isn’t anything here to warrant this addition to the series. It would have been a better idea for UbiSoft to have remade ‘The Sands of Time’ in HD, make The Prince look like Jake Gyllenhall, and charged the gaming public 400 Microsoft points for it. In conclusion, I’ll play this game to its end; just don’t ask me to be happy about it. 2 out of 5.
Stay tuned.

Alan Wake Review
There’s a moment in Alan Wake, where the titular protagonist reads a passage that goes, “The new one will be a masterpiece, I know it! You must tell him not to listen to the trolls in the forums saying ‘Departure’ will never get finished. He should take his time and make it perfect. I can wait.” Normally I’d view such a passage as a random piece of filler, but it seems especially apropos in light of the time and the near-vaporware status that Alan Wake has obtained over its long development time. Did Remedy make Alan Wake perfect while taking its time? I wouldn’t go that far, but Alan Wake is still a damn fine game.
One question that’s popped up whenever I thought about Alan Wake during its development is, “what kind of game is it?” I managed to avoid recent coverage, and started my playthrough only knowing that you wander the Pacific Northwest, and that a tractor tries to kill you at some point. So, after finally finishing it (about 14 hours of gameplay), I have an extraordinarily simple answer to that question: it’s a Remedy game. It alternates between standard-shooting-plus-a-central-mechanic (for Max Payne, it was bullet time, for Alan Wake, it’s the use of light) and delivering a story through extended dialogue and narration. In comparative shorthand, if Max Payne was Remedy taking The Punisher and turning that concept into a videogame, then Alan Wake is what happens when Remedy takes Stephen King’s The Dark Half and tries to make a game out of that (don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler — though the two plots share some similarities).
Game Night with the Halo: Reach Beta, Coming Soon
Time: Tuesday, May 4th, 2010, 5 p.m. PST
Location: Watch the embedded video player above.
Now that the Beta is open to the public, we thought it’d be a good idea just to see how we stack against the competition. This week we’re planning to play the Halo: Reach Beta with the community! If you want to join, send Teanah a message on XboxLive and we’ll invite you to our game in the order they’re recieved. Make sure to be online around the time you send your message though, or you’re out of luck. Watch, Sam, Nelson, Alan, and myself pass around the controller– and maybe even witness Sam getting his first kill!
Alan Wake DLC Already Announced!

It seems that Remedy, responsible for the Max Payne series and now the upcoming and very exciting Alan Wake, are full to the brim with confidence in their upcoming romp in the surprisingly sinister place that is Bright Falls in which you are going to play as the panic stricken author, Alan. So much so, it seems, that they already have prepared a DLC, boldly assuming that the game will leave players wanting more time in their tweed jackets within this so called ‘physiological action thriller’. I personally struggle to anticipate wanting anything else once the credits roll on Alan Wake myself to be honest, and so I feel confident that Remedy’s presumptions will turn out to be accurate and DLC will be on everyone’s lips soon after Wake’s release. It is for this reason that I am more than happy to welcome this very early news of DLC with open arms and a controller within one hand.
With Alan Wake adopting a television series style of storytelling, this DLC is going to take setting between the first- this game- and second- its sequel- ’season’, resolving a cliffhanger which game one will end on (don’t worry, however, the main story of Alan Wake 1 will be resolved within the actual game). Of, course, nobody has any idea how the game’s going to end at this pre-release point in time, which leaves the story of the DLC a complete mystery yet to be revealed. Remedy have actually tagged the DLC as being ‘A Christmas Special’, likening it to those ‘one-off’ episodes of TV programmes you get between series’. Whether or not this DLC will actually take place within the Yuletide- or any other holiday- season is unknown but with the actual game’s release date being on May 21, I doubt Remedy will want to wait too long so that Santa can distribute the DLC, so it will probably be launched much sooner and with an un-festive theme. That’s probably for the best really, as the idea of Rudolph in a psychological thriller doesn’t sound quite right to me.
When it all comes down to it, really, at whatever time of the year the DLC’s set in or when its launched or what it’s plotline is, I don’t doubt it will be welcome as Alan Wake will surely amass numerous fans upon its release who’ll be at this DLC as soon as their Wake withdrawal symptoms begin to manifest after completion of the game. So this DLC will surely be welcome and its early announcment can be seen as a blessing when we’re sitting bored after the doubtlessly great main Alan Wake game has concluded, with it still to look forward to.

Meet Alan Wake

Let’s face it; none of us have ever really had the desire to play as a tweed jacket wearing, flash light wielding (seriously, he fights with a torch) author who can’t even defeat the formidable foe that is writer’s block when we pick up our controllers. And yet, you’d be hard pressed to find any Xbox 360 owner who has not at the very least been slightly curious and intrigued by the idea of the upcoming game which puts you in control of that very man, Alan Wake. Now, after a difficult and constantly extended production, the undeniably stunning looking and intense game, which you can discover more about here, has emerged out of the gloomy mist of production and is now fast approaching the light of it’s almost certainly secure release date, May 21. In fact, words out that the game is finished and after 6 long years, fans can most likely feel confident that a well polished game will soon be in their hands, or else there’ll no doubt be trouble…
With an episodic style echoing such TV series’ as Twin Peaks and The X Files, and with a hero who should fill Stephen King readers or early 90s cinema goers with a sense of déjà vu as they remember the time they became acquainted with Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkes, Alan Wake is already an established thriller, with developer Remedy being cleverly selective as they draw their inspiration from already well known works of dark fiction. In fact, if you listen to this trailer carefully, you will actually hear a woman enthusiastically proclaim she’s Alan’s “biggest fan.” Again, do you remember Annie Wilkes in Misery?

All video demos which have been launched showing gameplay have been heart pounding just to watch, giving you an impression to how it will feel to actually play the game. Everything about the game is mouth watering to look at, with Remedy having put particular effort into getting the most authentic lighting any game has seen, including realistic shadows and weather spectrums. One thing which has also stood out to me, however, has been the music. You can obviously expect cinematic visuals from the people who brought you Max Payne, but it sounds as though the music is also going to be as powerful as you may expect from a motion picture. This fantastic score is collectively composed by Kimmo Kajasto, Petri Alanko and Poets of the Fall, and beautiful tasters of it can be heard on all the trailers of the game, including the one linked above.
When Wake does finally hit shelves, two editions are going to be available, and, unlike the likes of Modern Warfare 2’s Prestige Edition, the superior option won’t break the bank too much more than the normal edition will already. For the standard game, you will be paying about 40 pounds. For the special limited edition, you will only be paying the slightly steeper price of about 45 pounds. What extras will you get when you dig out that extra fiver? Well, you’ll get a copy of the game’s soundtrack (which I already mentioned sounds pretty good), a collection of behind the scenes DVDs, a book, and in-game commentaries. All this is packaged in an awesome casing modelled to look like an actual hardback book itself. So that fiver does go a long way.

When it comes down to it, though, Alan Wake is going to be a blast no matter what edition you get. With a thrilling episodic narrative, an immersive location, stunning graphics, and a free roaming sand-box style, I’d be surprised if this ‘psychological thriller’ doesn’t find itself on the top of your list of favourite games when it’s launched this May, exclusively for Xbox (which just makes us even with the PS3 players who are enjoying the joys of Heavy Rain). So don your tweed jacket, refill your torch’s batteries, and get ready to show some dark forces who’s boss in your quest to rescue your wife. Yeah, no one messes with an author!
