Oh the Humanity! The Biggest Blunders in Gaming History

Posted by admin On May - 27 - 2010

Over the years video games have provided so many of us with so much joy. However, sometimes a great idea gets lost in translation. Here are just some of the biggest blunders in video game history.

Virtual boy

In 1995 Nintendo released the first follow up to the Game Boy with horrifying results. The Virtual Boy was this terrible 3D goggle thing that you put your face into and “enjoyed” the red on black graphics. Headaches, stiff neck and eye strain were the by-product of playing this console. Needless to say, it tanked. I played one once at a Blockbuster when it was first released, and that was one time too many. Nintendo went back to the drawing board tail between legs. To be fair, it was the only failed console Nintendo released which is more than I can say for…

Sega CD/32X/Sega Saturn

Believe it or not, Sega used to make consoles. Moving forward they have been spending the last decade or so doing the thing they do best, making games. But during the 1990’s Sega was really into experimenting with people’s money, yielding brutal Hindenburg-style results. First it was the Sega CD in 1992. As the name would suggest, it was a CD-ROM add on to the successful Sega Genesis. It was pricey, no one made games for it, and the games they did have ran at a slower frame rate than their existing 16-bit counterparts. Harsh.
Next for Sega was the 32X, yet another add on for the Genesis (insert sound of bomb dropping from sky). As I remember there was only one game for it. Again, price, lack of third party support and an overall lack of Sega support killed this one. That’s it right? No, Sega would go on to make not one but two more systems.
On May 11, 1995 the Sega Saturn was released in North America. It was crazy expensive, $700! Crazier still, they are anywhere between $225-$1000 on ebay. I should have kept mine. After three years, few games, disgruntled console owners and bad memories the Saturn was discontinued. I remember how I felt as I swore I would never buy another Sega product ever again. I think many people felt just as I did because in late 1998 Sega released its newest console, Dreamcast. Even though the system was the improvement Sega has been aiming for, it was too little, too late and nobody bought one. Game over.

CDi

In 1991 Royal Philips Electronics attempted to enter the video console wars by pairing up with Nintendo to create an add on for the Super Nintendo. Long story short, the deal fell through and Philips was left with a $700 paperweight. Ouch. Nintendo did give CDi the right to make games featuring Nintendo characters. Those games, (three Zelda, one Mario) were some of the worst ever made. Double ouch.

Atari Jaguar

This blunder needs no introduction. Just the name ‘Atari Jaguar’ is synonymous with just about the biggest dud in video game history. In 1993, Atari re-entered the console business for the last time with the Jaguar. It was over priced, (why were all these terrible consoles $700?) hard for developers to make games for and had this controller that didn’t fit in the average person’s hands. Like Sega, Atari went back to just making games and left the console market for good.

This has just been a taste of the worst. Honorable mentions go to; Panasonic 3DO, Amiga C32, Nokia N-Gage, Neo-Geo and Gizmondo. Stay tuned.

Why We Play Mario

Why We Play Mario

1UP readers contemplate their love for Nintendo’s enduring mascot.

By Bob Mackey

If one video game character has withstood the test of time, it’s Mario. Despite playing second fiddle to a giant ape in his 1980 debut, Donkey Kong, everyone’s favorite Italian plumber went on to star in the world-changing NES classic, Super Mario Bros., and subsequently saved the video game industry from itself — a much greater feat than rescuing some ditzy princess.

Granted, Mario’s initial adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom wasn’t the first side-scrolling 2D platformer, but it was the first 2D side-scrolling platformer done right. It might be hard to imagine with our modern-day emphasis on realism and grit, but 25 years ago, the carefree journey of a squat, mustachioed man in overalls brought video games away from their status as a passing fad, and soon turned Nintendo into a household name. Without Mario, it’s entirely plausible that we folks of the future would treat video games with the same patronizing terms we reserve for something like air hockey. That’s a pretty big deal.

Ace Attorney Announced for iPhone

Posted by admin On May - 22 - 2010

Capcom revealed today that the Ace Attorney series will soon be making the leap from its traditional place on Nintendo’s consoles to the iPhone.

Phoenix Wright on the iPhone looks to be a port of the original Nintendo DS release, which itself began life as a Game Boy Advance game. Interestingly, the release promises “all five of the GBA classic cases,” despite the original’s fifth case being exclusive to the Nintendo DS.

The port promises a “flick interface” that takes full advantage of the touchscreen, enabling players to easily organize items. It will also be used for investigating crime scenes and presenting evidence.

Suda51 Would "Love" to Develop a 3DS Game

Posted by admin On May - 19 - 2010

Suda51Goichi Suda must really have a thing for lightsabers. Not only does main character Travis Touchdown basically wield one in his No More Heroes series, but “Suda51″ recently said to Official Nintendo Magazine that he’d “love” to make a Nintendo 3DS game…that’ll give you force training?

“I do have many ideas. I would love to try to develop a game for 3DS if I have a chance,” Suda said, after being asked about his interest in Nintendo’s new handheld. And one of his ideas is: “I hope for the realization of a training remote like Luke Skywalker used for force training in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.”

We’ve watched Star Wars as many times as the next videogamer, but honestly, we’re not entirely sure what exactly he’s talking about. Is it this little robot thing? Does Suda51 want to shoot tiny lasers at us out of the 3DS? Can the 3DS do that?

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands Wii Review

Posted by admin On May - 18 - 2010

It’d be nice to think that we, as consumers, had outgrown motion controls for the sake of motion controls shortly after the Nintendo Wii’s hype-laden launch. Admittedly, the unique functionality of the Nintendo Wii Remote holds the potential for some interesting and intuitive interactions; but more often than not, Nintendo Wii developers prefer to have the player flail around like a moron in lieu of a more traditional — and elegant — motion control solution. Such is the case with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, a title far different than its identically-named 360/PS3 counterpart, and seemingly designed to take advantage of the Nintendo Wiimote’s strengths without taking into account any of its weaknesses. And when it comes to a series typically focused on precise platforming, that’s just asking for trouble.

Unlike the 2008 reboot Prince of Persia, The Forgotten Sands turns the clock back to a more linear Sands of Time-style adventure, though without any helpful time-rewinding magic. The Prince isn’t completely unprepared, though; to assist him with the traditional, jumping, running, climbing, and swinging, his djann (a female djinn) partner Zahra offers up a handful of powers new to the series, along with the opportunity for plenty of annoying banter.

Nintendo Files Trademarks for "3DSWare," "3DSPlay"

Posted by admin On May - 18 - 2010

Nintendo 3DS

Although Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently said that “Nintendo 3DS” would not be the “formal name” for Nintendo’s new handheld, new Japanese trademark filings possibly suggest otherwise. According to Siliconera, Nintendo has filed trademarks for “3DSWare” and “3DSPlay.”

The former clearly suggests Nintendo may be planning a down-loadable games service for the 3DS similar to the DSiWare service they have for the DSi. As for 3DSPlay, that’s harder to say — obviously Nintendo launched a mini-game compellation on the Nintendo Wii called Nintendo Wii Play, but whether 3DSPlay is some sort of equivalent to show off what they’re new hand-held is capable of remains to be seen.

On top of these two 3DS-specific trademark filings, Nintendo also filed trademarks in Japan for DS Sound, DS Name Card, DS Magazine, DSfilm, DSCamera, DSCinema, DSMessage, DSMusic, and DSAlbum — all of which could simply be to protect these terms, with Nintendo not necessarily having any ideas to use them with any real products. Could it be the same with 3DSWare and 3DSPlay? Possibly, but no doubt all will be revealed when E3 kicks off in a few weeks.

On this day in 1993, the lengthy antitrust battle between Atari and Nintendo came to a conclusion, with a Federal District Court Judge finding Atari guilty of violating Nintendo’s patent relating to its security lockout chip.

The 10NES chip (pictured, above) was Nintendo’s security measure for preventing unauthorized game makers from manufacturing games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It essentially acted as the “key” for a “lock” inside the NES itself — the chip on the cart would interact with the one in the console, and if they matched, the game would boot up. If they didn’t, the NES would put itself in an endless reset cycle.
