APB Coming June 29, Pricing Model Revealed

Posted by admin On April - 30 - 2010

APB

Realtime Worlds — the developer behind the original Crackdown — has revealed that their upcoming action MMO APB will be launched on June 29 in North America (July 2 in Europe), and they’ve also revealed the pricing model their game will use.

As explained on the updated ABP FAQ (that title is really kind of awkward when placed directly next to another acronym, isn’t it?), the game will cost a standard £49.99 when it’s launched, and that’ll include 50 free hours of “action game play” and unlimited time in the game’s social districts for “customizing, socializing and trading in the marketplace.” Once those 50 hours are over, there are two payment options: £6.99 for another 20 hours, or £9.99 for an unlimited 30-day pass. Realtime Worlds also promises discounts if players opt for 90 or 180 days, but specific prices for those packages weren’t revealed.

Interestingly, there is one other way to get more gameplay time in APB: by earning it in the game itself. The press release states that APB “provides avenues for accomplished gamers or creators to earn rewards for their creativity and subsidize their ongoing costs with their in-game efforts,” although it remains vague about how these merit-based game-time rewards are specifically earned.

Nintendo delays new Metroid, Sin & Punishment

Posted by admin On April - 24 - 2010

Nintendo’s delayed two of its summer titles; Metroid: Other M and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. Just slightly though.

Sin & Punishment has slipped from its previous June 1 release and taken Other M’s old date of June 27, while the new Metroid itself is now expected on August 31.

Reasons for the delays weren’t given, just that Nintendo has “updated information for some of its key upcoming software releases”.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 remains unaffected though. It’s still on for a May 23 release in North America and June 11 in Europe.

Ubisoft flies over a R.U.S.E. trailer

Posted by admin On April - 23 - 2010

Ubisoft’s offering a quick new look at their deceptive RTS R.U.S.E.. The lesson of the day this “Wings of Death” trailer brings: how to rain death from the skies.

The game’s out early June; the 4th in Europe, 8th in North America.

Ahh. You see that? That’s my home state of Oregon perfectly rendered. The trees, the mountains, the abandonedpetrolstation, the beat down pickup lorryprobably driven by a meth addict. Oregon’s splendor has never been given the attention it deserves by the videogame realm, and that great injustice will be undone when Alan Wake launches in May, and to hype up the release, Microsoft has revealed Bright Falls, a six part episodic film series that will serve as a prequel to the game.

The series is directed by Sundance award winner Phillip Van, stars Tom Noonan (as seen on Damages) and Cooper Huckabee (soon to be on True Blood), and was filmed on location here in the great State of Oregon. If you have XboxLive Gold, the first two episodes will be available on April 25th. Silver members can down-load them April 26th, and if you’d rather watch them on the internet, they’ll be available on Brightfalls.com April 27th. A new episode will be launched weekly from that point on, and the final two episodes will be launched on May 17th, just one day before the game is launched in North America (which includes Oregon). The press release promises the series to have a distinctly Twin Peaks feel to it, and if they wanted the series to have a somewhat abnormal and depressing feel to it, they picked the right place to film it.

Nier gets launch trailer now, DLC later

Posted by admin On April - 20 - 2010

Square Enix’s Nier is getting down-loadable content, executive producer Yosuke Saito has confirmed. Siliconera caught the news from an interview posted on Xbox’s Japanese website.

Having previously said that the team at developer Cavia has some interesting post-launch content ideas, Saito revealed that work on said content began straight after the game’s completion.

“In fact, this title has distribution ideas for down-loadable content, work began immediately after completing the main story… how should I say it, we’re just making it now,” Saito’s translated as saying. “I don’t have the feeling of being finished. (haha)”

The game’s out on April 23 in Europe and the 27th in North America. The three-minute launch trailer above is recent, too.

Crackdown 2 holds nothing sacred

Posted by admin On April - 20 - 2010

“There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing bodies piling over the car and exploding into particle fireworks” — that just about sums up the sick minds at Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games, as seen in the second developer video above (catch the previous one here).

The 360 exclusive’s out on July 6 in North America, July 8 in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and July 9 in Europe.

Ubisoft ditches printed manuals, goes green

Posted by admin On April - 19 - 2010

Ubisoft is doing away with printed game manuals.

Starting with Shaun White Skateboarding this winter, the manuals for all of the company’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles will be included on the game disc in digital form — an environmental initiative that allows for “easier and more intuitive access to game information” as well as more robust manuals, they say.

And, it saves the trees.

“Ubisoft is often recognized for making great games, but it’s a special privilege to be the industry leader at saving trees,” Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft NA, says. “Eco-friendly initiatives are important to the global community and introducing in-game digital manuals on Xbox 360 and PS3 is just the latest example of Ubisoft’s ongoing commitment to being a more environmentally conscious company.”

In addition, the company’s PC game boxes in North America will soon be the ‘industry’s most environmentally-responsible’. Current cases will be replaced with Technimark’s 100%-recycled polypropylene ones. This month’s Splinter Cell: Conviction will be leading the charge on that one.

The black Wii controllers are coming to North America, EA set to release NFL arcade this December, & Paramount announces Chris Pine will be the new Jack Ryan. See more IGN videos at video.ign.com

First 3D PlayStation 3 Games Coming in June

Posted by admin On April - 15 - 2010

PlayStation 3Sony has revealed that their first wave of 3D PlayStation 3 games will be launching in June, along with their first 3D-capable television, the Sony HX803. This model will be of particular interest to gamers as Sony also revealed it’ll come (at least in Europe) with a voucher to down-load four entire 3D-capable PlayStation 3 games from the PlayStation Network.

The free games include Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, PAIN, and Super Stardust HD (via T3). As Sony previously revealed, gamers will need to down-load a firmware update to make their PS3’s 3D capable, which should be launched by June as well. 3D glasses will also be necessary, and you’ll have to buy them separately as they’re apparently not bundled with the HX803 model.

There’s no word yet on whether the same free games deal will apply to North America, but we’ll update once confirmation comes one way or the other. Other PS3 games planned (or rumored) for 3D compatibility include Little Big Planet and Killzone 2, and possibly Gran Turismo 5.
