Modern armed combat in videogames is nothing new, with a lot games taking place in the, “not so distant future.” As a consequence, most of the technology featured in those games, while cutting edge, is something one would see on a battlefield today — save for a few creative liberties taken to make something work better or look cooler. Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon series however, has always opted to look a little further into the future, by setting the theaters of war roughly 10 years ahead of the year of each respective game’s release, and giving the titular Ghost special forces group access to tech that the soldier of the future will use. It’s fitting, then, that the newest installment in the series (being developed by Ubisoft’s Paris studio), is titled Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Set 10 to 15 years from now, the equipment that the Ghosts, and likewise their adversaries, in Future Soldier have is all based on technology that’s currently under development for use by the United States military. The team at Red Storm (the blokes behind the previous installments in the Ghost Recon series, and providing support for Ubisoft Paris) likened the Ghosts to, “F-16s on legs” — a line from U.S. Army Natick R&D engineer and Future Force Warrior guru Jean-Louis DeGay. With their Iron Man-like shoulder-mounted mortar launchers, exoskeletons that allow them to carry hundreds of pounds of gear, and invisibility cloak-esque optical camouflage, there’s little arguing with that notion. That’s not to say that each member of the Ghost squad is geared up equally — as a huge part of Future Soldier’s gameplay is how well you work together with the differently equipped members of the team.

Splinter Cell: Conviction

As far as Ubisoft has ever let on, Splinter Cell: Conviction is exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC. But assuming it wasn’t a mistake, an Ubisoft employee’s LinkedIn profile seemed to suggest they might have ideas for the PlayStation 3 after all — and maybe even this year. PlayStation Lifestyle noticed (via VG247) that lead software engineer Marc Demers’s online CV listed Conviction for “360, PS3, PC (2010).”

As you might expect, Demers has since removed the PS3 listing on his profile, but not before PlayStation Lifestyle took a screen cap as proof. However, while the screen cap proves the listing was there, it’s not yet necessarily proof that Conviction is coming to the PS3; it’s possible — although for a lead programmer, it seems a little unlikely — that the PS3 reference was simply a mistake.

While there’s never been any indication that Conviction would also be made for the PS3, Ubisoft Toronto and Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat did at least seem to leave the door open last year, saying, “Until further notice [the franchise is staying on Xbox 360]. However, I’m only the one making the games, you should talk to the people in Paris [for a final answer].”

Ubisoft’s DRM Servers Under Attack by Hackers

Assassin's Creed 2

Following a span of a number of hours yesterday when owners of the PC version of Assassin’s Creed 2 and Silent Hunter 5 couldn’t play due to problems with Ubisoft’s DRM authentication servers, the company now says the server problems were the result of hacker attacks — attacks that are evidently still ongoing. As of this writing, Ubisoft’s official Twitter account reports the DRM authentication servers are once again under attack, locking some gamers out of their perfectly legally owned games.

An earlier tweet on their account attributed yesterday’s outage to hackers as well, saying “Servers were attacked which limited service from 2:30PM to 9:00PM Paris time [8:30AM to 3:00PM EST].” Now, a tweet that was posted about two hours (again, as of this writing) says that “Our servers are under attack again. Some gamers are experiencing trouble signing in. We’re working on it and will keep you posted.”

Yet another earlier tweet claimed that “95% of players were not affected” by yesterday’s server outage, with only a “small group of players” receiving denial of service messages when trying to play Assassin’ Creed 2 or Silent Hunter 5.
