SCEA VP Wants More Content On Disc, Not DLC
Fewer changes in the gaming industry over the past few years have caused more debate than the rise of down-loadable content — and even hardware executives are chiming in. Speaking to Gamasutra, Sony Computer Entertainment America vice president Rob Dyer explained why he wants to see more content going on discs and less sold later on the Internet.
“That way, 100 percent of the users are going to get it. 100 percent,” Dyer said. “What are we, north of 70 percent [of PS3 owners] on the [PlayStation Network] now? 73, I think. Microsoft probably the same… [That's] still a significant number of people that aren’t able to get [it], whether they don’t have broadband, whether they just flat out can’t get on the network. Whether or not you do it, they’re not using it. I want it on the disc, that way when they buy it, they get it. So, if I can do that, that’s great.”
Still, Dyer also acknowledged why DLC does remain a component in today’s videogame market. “Now, you can talk about why DLC is important to help limit the used game business and to keep people holding onto [the game],” he said. “I’m all about that, too. I love that. But I want it on the disc so that 100 percent out there that can play this thing.”

Sony Registers inFamous 2 Domain
Rumors have circulated about a sequel to inFamous for some time now. The first game was quite well received, and following its release last May we heard about a possible inFamous film and actor David Sullivan tweeted about auditioning for the role of main character Cole who was, according to Sullivan, being re-cast for the sequel. And earlier this year, PlayStation: The Official Magazine reported that Sony was rumored to be revealing inFamous 2 at E3 this year alongside Killzone 3 and Resistance 3. A more recent issue also suggested that inFamous 2 would make it out this year, though they also said the same of Bcash machinean: Arkham Asylum 2, something that a U.K. retailer doesn’t believe is the case.
Regardless, the mounting evidence and seemingly obvious choice to develop a sequel should make it no surprise to hear that Sony has registered a web domain (via VG247, PlayStation Lifestyle) for inFamous 2: infamous2thegame.com. A WHOIS search reveals Sony Computer Entertainment America as the registrant and points to SCEA’s DNS servers, so it’s unlikely this is simply a fan who registered the domain.
Whether or not this domain is legitimate, keep your eyes peeled during E3 in June for the first official word on inFamous 2.

Genre: Action-Adventure

OVERVIEW
Developed exclusively for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system, God of War® III is the final installment of the multi-million unit-selling trilogy. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment’s Santa Monica Studios, God of War III will bring epic battles to life with stunning graphics and an elaborate plot that puts Kratos at the center of carnage and destruction as he seeks revenge against the Gods who have betrayed him.
Set in the realm of brutal Greek mythology, God of War III is a singleplayer game that allows players to take on the climatic role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he scales through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hell to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him. Armed with double-chained blades, and an array of new guns and weapons and magic for this iteration of the trilogy, Kratos must take on mythology’s darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus.
Utilizing a new game engine built from the ground up and state-of-the-art visual technologies, the development team behind God of War III has made standard-setting strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions quadrupling since God of War II on PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, God of War III, in its debut on the PS3 system, will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos’ fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale that is four times larger than its predecessor.
KEY FEATURES
- ONLY ON THE PS3 SYSTEM- The award-winning development team leverages the processing power and technology of PLAYSTATION 3 system to make God of War III one of the most-graphically advanced next gen titles available, with even the dramatic cut screens running off the in-game engine.
- GROUNDBREAKING DEPTH OF SCALE – Kratos will explore areas up to 4 times larger than those found in God of War II, as well as carve through entire armies while navigating on the back of Titans – living, moving, breathing levels as tall as the Empire State Building.
- STYLIZED REALISM – Players will battle in detailed and unique 3D worlds lit by thousands of dynamic lights and textures with quadruple the resolution, which allows for realistic muscle striations, detailed facial expressions, and new heightened levels of brutality and gore.
- SIGNATURE GAMEPLAY - Brutal combat, intricate puzzles, exploration of awe-inspiring worlds, and a compelling and satisfying ending to Kratos’ epic story.
- SOPHISTICATED STORYLINE – The God of War III storyline is the epic conclusion to the triology; the storyline will be told in a way that is true to traditionalist roots in Greek mythology, from moral consequences to brutal battles against the Gods.
- RIDEABLE CREATURES – Several of the menacing creatures of Greek mythology in God of War III can now be manipulated against their will, as Kratos uses them to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies, reveal puzzles and secrets, and as tools of complete annihilation.
- NEW guns and weapons AND COMBAT SYSTEM- New deadly guns and weapons such as the Cestus – powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength – and other brutal instruments of war that will allow Kratos to learn ruthless new techniques such as grappling with enemies and launching explosive wall-to-ground attacks.
- LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES – The dynamic lighting solution employed in GOW III is only feasible through the computing power provided by the Cell SPUs. For example, using the High Dynamic Range Lighting (HDRL) technology, the camera – when using Krato’s sightline – will emulate the human retina, causing players to feel a sharp brightness when Kratos exits a dark area and enters a sunlit area, similar to how the human eye would need to adjust.
Tretton Promises Killzone 3, Compares Natal to PS2 EyeToy
The latest episode of GameTrailers TV featured an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton, and he sure had quite a bit to say — both about Sony’s own projects and their competitors. On the show, Tretton promised Killzone fans that a third game in the series will indeed be revealed (…eventually), and also compared Microsoft’s Xbox Project Natal to the EyeToy they launched for the PlayStation 2 nearly a decade ago.
“We own Guerrilla Studios and they did a great job on Killzone 1 and 2,” Tretton said on the subject of Killzone 3. “I don’t know when you’ll see any announcements about it but I can promise you a Killzone 3.” We’ve seen rumors about a third Killzone game before, but this is the clearest confirmation yet that it will indeed be made — and probably fairly soon.
Moving on to the subject of Sony’s Move motion controller, Tretton had some sharp words for the technology it’ll be competing against when it launches alongside Microsoft’s Natal this fall. “If you really want to get involved in playing with a camera I suggest you go out and buy a £99 PlayStation 2 and play some of the great technology we invented eight years ago,” Tretton said. “I think ultimately [the Move] is next generation gaming.”
MGS: Peace Walker Out June 8 with Limited Edition PSP Bundle
Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker — the PSP Metal Gear game that Hideo Kojima says easily could have been called Metal Gear Solid 5 — will be launched in North America on June 8, and it’s coming alongside a limited edition PSP Entertainment Pack.
The pack will include the above-pictured “spirited green” version of a PSP-3000 (but not a PSPgo… how about that), Peace Walker on UMD, a 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, and a voucher for a free PSN film (the title will be revealed later), all for £199. This will be the first time this spirited green PSP will be available in North America. Additionally, this copy of Peace Walker will also contain exclusive in-game items like a camouflage pattern with FOX logos and a “Stealth Gun” feature that can be unlocked early in the game.
Naturally, Peace Walker will also be launched digitally for the PSPgo, in case you happen to have one of those instead. For more on Peace Walker, check out our last pgame review to see what to expect.
