The Outsider still coming, Braben says

Frontier Developments’ high-tech thriller The Outsider is still very much in the works, studio founder and boss David Braben has assured.
The title, first revealed back in 2005, sees a CIA agent (the player) falsely accused and framed as a traitor. How the player chooses to go about clearing his name is where past promises of “genuine freedom” likely come into play.
The game’s been running silent for a number of years now but, Braben tells Eurogamer, it’s still being worked on: “It’s very exciting and we’re still working hard on it. I’m not talking about it yet but watch this space.”
In the meanwhile, Frontier has revealed and launched Nintendo WiiWare titles LostWinds and LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias. The studio’s also tinkering away on Elite IV, which it would be “mad” not to work on.
Former GRIN staffers form second studio

The team behind GRIN’s Bionic Commando: Rearmed, the generally well-received XBLA/PSN/PC remake of the Capcom classic, have revealed the formation of Might&Delight, a new studio that’ll focus on developing “small, fresh games with strong old school flavor”.
The Stockholm, Sweden-based studio’s still on the lookout for their first project and will be “courting various publishers for a chance to transform their classics,” they write on their website.
Might&Delight is the second studio founded by former GRIN staff. As the studio was forced to close its doors last August, the existence of Outbreak Studios — formed by 25 ex-GRINners, most of whom were involved in Bionic Commando, Terminator Salvation and Wanted: guns and weapons of Fate — was also revealed. It was said to focus on digital titles for XBLA, PSN, PC, PSPgo, and the iPhone.
1UP Community on Respawn, Infinity Ward, and Changing Studios
We could have guessed that the announcement of Respawn Entertainment, the new studio from former Infinity-Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella, would send ripples through the industry. We probably wouldn’t have guessed that the ripples would be tidal waves, or that they’d come this fast. Since the announcement, we’ve run four separate stories regarding developers leaving Infinity-Ward. Not all of them are necessarily related to Respawn — senior animator Bruce Ferriz left to join Big Red Button — but it’s a safe bet that at least some of the talent is heading to join the new studio. So far, 11 staff members in all have been confirmed as departing.
We wondered what you in thecommunity thought of this, and it provided a perfect opportunity to test drive a feature we’ve been considering. We asked for board members to chime in with their opinions for a point/counterpoint style article. We wanted opinions that went a step above the usual Internet flame-fests and fan wars, and you blokes delivered. Check out the thread for the full rules and to let us know your own opinions, and let us know how you feel about the article itself in the comments below.
For this edition, we asked a simple question: is a studio the same after its leaders have left?
Four more leave Infinity Ward

Infinity-Ward has lost another four employees today; Modern Warfare 2 lead designers Steve Fukuda and Zied Reike, programmer Rayme Vinson, and lead artist Chris Cherubini have all left the Call of Duty creator, sources close to the studio have told Kotaku.
That makes nine total walkouts the Activision-owned studio has seen since bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired just over a month ago.
When, if and who of the departed will end up at West and Zampella’s new EA-backed Respawn studio is still up in the air. But it’s going to be quite a few, the betting man in me whispers.
Infinity Ward Loses More Staff Members
The long saga of Infinity-Ward fallout continues today, as we receive word that two more staff members have left the developer. IGN reports that senior animator Bruce Ferriz has left the studio and joined Big Red Button Entertainment. Meanwhile, Kotaku gives word that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 lead designer Mackey McCandlish left the studio, after having worked there since 2002.
These are just the latest staff changes since Activision sparked an ugly battle by laying off studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. Since then we’ve seen lawsuits, counter-suits, and even a bit of corporate back-biting. The story will continue to develop for quite some time, and it seems that we’re hearing more details every few days.
We had formerly heard that lead designer Todd Alderman and lead software engineer Francesco Gigliotti had left the company, followed shortly by programmer Jon Shiring. Now we can add McCandlish and Ferriz to the list of key Infinity-Ward staff that have left the studio. Ferriz is the only former staff member who has publicly revealed his next step. It seems likely that at least some of the former staff are planning to join, or will be recruited by, West and Zampella’s new studio, Respawn Entertainment.
Too Human developer granted $4 million for ‘next-gen’ title
![]()
Too Human developer Silicon Knights has been granted £4 million from the Canadian government that will be put towards funding the studio’s next multiplatform project, The Tribune reports.
According to president Denis Dyack, the grant is going to benefit the studio in “profound and long-lasting” ways and will be used to immediately add 65 employees to the already 100+ strong studio.
“We are blown away and we’re happy with the support we’re getting,” he said. “It is something that couldn’t have come at a better time.”
As for the title in question, actual details are nonexistent. The company has been rumored to be working on something called The Box, and Dyack has called their next project “nothing like anything else we’ve ever made before,” but they’re keeping things under wraps for now.
“In our industry, you have to be very careful never to announce anything until the right time,” Dyack said. “We can only say it’s a next generation title and a high production value game. That’s all we can say.”
Apocalypse Now Game May Be Coming from Former Mercenaries, Saboteur Devs
A new Hollywood game studio consisting of former Mercenaries and Saboteur developers may be adapting the classic Coppola film Apocalypse Now to videogames, according to online investigations.
Though the studio — named Killspace Entertainment — has not formally revealed itself, its official website and Twitter account are live and currently accessible.
Former Infinity Ward Employee Offers Insight into Ousted Studio Heads
The messy breakup between former Infinity-Ward studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella has been well publicized, but less well known is how members of the studio felt about their former bosses. G4 has an unearthed a few insights via one team member’s Linkedin recommendation for Zampella, which spoke of his role in “turning around the talent from a team that was overworked and unhappy with their previous conditions.”
The recommendation was written by former production coordinator Jesse Heinig, who was a team member from 2004 to 2005. That would be roughly the period in which Infinity-Ward was working on Call of Duty 2, which was an Xbox 360 launch title.
“I had the pleasure of working briefly for Vince and seeing his skills first-hand,” Heinig wrote. “Vince’s history in the game development business should already be legendary. How he, Grant Collier, and Jason West forged Infinity-Ward by turning around the talent from a team that was overworked and unhappy with their previous conditions.”

Infinity Ward Loses Two More Key Staff Figures
Following the ousting of studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella under rather bizarre circumstances last month, Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity-Ward has now lost two more key figures from its staff: Lead designer Todd Alderman and lead software engineer Francesco Gigliotti.
Word of the departures of Alderman and Gigliotti spread after the two updated their Linkin profiles to reflect their newfound unemployment. Although the reason for their departures hasn’t been confirmed, Kotaku reports that a source “close to the studio” says they resigned. Alderman had been with Infinity-Ward for over eight years (and was a key multi-player designer on the Modern Warfare series), and Gigliotti was with Infinity-Ward for over seven years.
This of course comes after studio heads West and Zampella were fired over what Activision contended was “breaches of contract and insubordination” — a move that was quickly followed by West and Zampella suing Activision over wrongful termination. It’s still unclear what either West and Zameplla or Alderman and Gigliotti plan to do next, although reports also followed last month that West and Zampella joined the enormous Hollywood talent agency CAA.
