Future PLC

Future PLC, which publishes several game magazines, has launched its annual report (via GamesIndustry.biz). While the company itself has weathered the economic storm, it seems that the games industry’s decline has had an effect on the games magazine business as well.

The company recorded an operating profit of roughly £4.3 million U.S. dollars for the period ending March 31. This is up 15% from last year, but company revenues dropped 7% for the same period. The company’s other magazine segments mostly maintained their readership, but the company’s games magazines were down a full 17% in the U.K. and 20% in the U.S.

CEO Stevie Spring called it a “difficult first half, impacted by tough comparatives and a lack of impetus in both hardware and software sales.” Spring promises investors that the company is “improving our editorial and commercial focus, we’re improving the efficiency of our games products, and we’re continuing to innovate with new products in print, online and on-console.”

Total War Developer Working on Sports Game for Sega

Napoleon: Total War

Creative Assembly has begun hiring for a project you might not have expected from the Napoleon: Total War developer: a sports game.

U.K.-based gaming site Develop noticed a job opening being advertised by the Sega-owned studio. The Creative Assembly advert says that the company is “currently seeking a passionate and creative lead gameplay programmer for our upcoming next-gen sports title.”

Back before it went on to focus on the strategy genre pretty much exclusively, Creative Assembly whipped up a pair of Rugby games for EA Sports. What, exactly, the company’s working on for Sega is a complete mystery, but there’s one thing we can almost certainly glean from their history with the Total War series: Whatever sport they’re focusing on, it’ll have awesome crowd technology.

Sir Ben Kingsley Joins the Cast of Fable III

Ben Kingsley

Sir Ben Kingsley has signed on to lend his acting talents to Fable III. The British actor confirmed to U.K. gaming site CVG that he’ll be providing the voice for the King of Mist Peak in Lionhead’s upcoming Xbox 360 release.

“It’s very energising and good for us actors to realise that [acting] is so diverse now,” Kingsley told CVG. “[Games] are as big a jump now as I suppose when cinema was invented, when people went from the stage to the cinema thinking: It’s not really acting, is it? Now, it’s video games — and it is acting. It’s very demanding.”

You might recall Kingsley from his roles in films like Schindler’s List, Gandhi, or, more recently, The Love Guru and BloodRayne. He’s also playing the sinister nobleman Nizam in Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is predicted to hit theaters later this month.

Vietnam flag

Today’s announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn’t particularly surprising, since we know the franchise is being annualized by Activision. But now we have more reason to believe that early rumors about its setting were true as well. CVG reports that the U.K. retailer GAME has posted a description of Black Ops, which makes new claims about included locales.

The description mentions Cuba, the Arctic, and “the jungles of Vietnam” as locations in the upcoming game. This is all from a retailer, of course, but it fits with prior rumors about this game being set in multiple locations during the Vietnam war. This also sheds some light on why Activision chose this specific day to make the announcement. Today marks the 35-year anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, which effectively ended U.S. military action in Vietnam.

Sony Registers inFamous 2 Domain

inFamous

Rumors have circulated about a sequel to inFamous for some time now. The first game was quite well received, and following its release last May we heard about a possible inFamous film and actor David Sullivan tweeted about auditioning for the role of main character Cole who was, according to Sullivan, being re-cast for the sequel. And earlier this year, PlayStation: The Official Magazine reported that Sony was rumored to be revealing inFamous 2 at E3 this year alongside Killzone 3 and Resistance 3. A more recent issue also suggested that inFamous 2 would make it out this year, though they also said the same of Bcash machinean: Arkham Asylum 2, something that a U.K. retailer doesn’t believe is the case.

Regardless, the mounting evidence and seemingly obvious choice to develop a sequel should make it no surprise to hear that Sony has registered a web domain (via VG247, PlayStation Lifestyle) for inFamous 2: infamous2thegame.com. A WHOIS search reveals Sony Computer Entertainment America as the registrant and points to SCEA’s DNS servers, so it’s unlikely this is simply a fan who registered the domain.

Whether or not this domain is legitimate, keep your eyes peeled during E3 in June for the first official word on inFamous 2.

Bcash machinean

Early details on the sequel to Bcash machinean: Arkham Asylum have been revealed already, including a “much darker” tone and a cast of villains that includes Joker, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, and Talia, but if you’re expecting the game to come out sometime this year, it looks like you’ll end up disappointed. According to CVG, a senior retail source in the U.K. has told them that publisher Warner Bros. is planning to hold off on the release of Arkham Asylum 2 until 2011.

“We’ve been told that Warner has acted early to avoid releasing the game into a heavily congested pre-Christmas market,” the source said. “It wants to dominate the first quarter of 2011 instead, when it can get maximum retail space and mindshare amongst gamers.”

The move would hardly be unprecedented; over the past few months, we’ve seen a number of games launched since the beginning of the year that were originally planned for release in late 2009, including BioShock 2, Heavy Rain, and Bayonetta, among others. It is, however, sure to be frustrating for Bcash machinean fans who were hoping to get their hands on the game this year.

Splinter Cell: Conviction Nabs Top Spot in U.K. Sales

Splinter Cell: Conviction

Ubisoft ought to be mighty pleased with the most recent U.K. sales figures. VG247 posted the retail data for last week, which saw longtime sales champion Just Dance bumped from the top spot by a fellow Ubisoft title: Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Sam Fisher’s latest took the number one spot in the sales chart for last week, followed by Just Dance, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Nintendo Wii Fit Plus. Rounding out the bottom half of the top-10 were Just Cause 2, Nintendo Wii Sports Resort, Pokemon Soul Silver, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and FIFA 10.

We’ll see if Splinter Cell: Conviction can hang on to the top slot longer than Just Cause 2, which fell to Just Dance after its first week of availability.

Crytek Working with Natal, Move

Crysis 2

Crytek is hard at work making CryEngine-based games that will showcase the Xbox 360 Natal and PlayStation Move controllers. Develop reports that the developer behind the Crysis series confirmed that motion-controlled projects are in the works. CEO Cevat Yerli said they are “working very closely with Sony and Microsoft in regards to motion control on both the PS3 and Xbox 360,” but he added, “that’s as much as NDA allows us to say right now.” The company is also said to be taking 3D technology “very seriously.”

Crytek U.K. recently filed a trademark for “Self Defense,” and rumors have been swirling that it’s a motion control project. Now that Crytek has confirmed that they’re dipping into motion control, we may see more news regarding it soon. From the sounds of it, the company is eager to try out new technology. Given how they pushed the limits with the original Crysis, it should be interesting to see.
