Oh the Humanity! The Biggest Blunders in Gaming History

Posted by admin On May - 27 - 2010

Over the years video games have provided so many of us with so much joy. However, sometimes a great idea gets lost in translation. Here are just some of the biggest blunders in video game history.

Virtual boy

In 1995 Nintendo released the first follow up to the Game Boy with horrifying results. The Virtual Boy was this terrible 3D goggle thing that you put your face into and “enjoyed” the red on black graphics. Headaches, stiff neck and eye strain were the by-product of playing this console. Needless to say, it tanked. I played one once at a Blockbuster when it was first released, and that was one time too many. Nintendo went back to the drawing board tail between legs. To be fair, it was the only failed console Nintendo released which is more than I can say for…

Sega CD/32X/Sega Saturn

Believe it or not, Sega used to make consoles. Moving forward they have been spending the last decade or so doing the thing they do best, making games. But during the 1990’s Sega was really into experimenting with people’s money, yielding brutal Hindenburg-style results. First it was the Sega CD in 1992. As the name would suggest, it was a CD-ROM add on to the successful Sega Genesis. It was pricey, no one made games for it, and the games they did have ran at a slower frame rate than their existing 16-bit counterparts. Harsh.
Next for Sega was the 32X, yet another add on for the Genesis (insert sound of bomb dropping from sky). As I remember there was only one game for it. Again, price, lack of third party support and an overall lack of Sega support killed this one. That’s it right? No, Sega would go on to make not one but two more systems.
On May 11, 1995 the Sega Saturn was released in North America. It was crazy expensive, $700! Crazier still, they are anywhere between $225-$1000 on ebay. I should have kept mine. After three years, few games, disgruntled console owners and bad memories the Saturn was discontinued. I remember how I felt as I swore I would never buy another Sega product ever again. I think many people felt just as I did because in late 1998 Sega released its newest console, Dreamcast. Even though the system was the improvement Sega has been aiming for, it was too little, too late and nobody bought one. Game over.

CDi

In 1991 Royal Philips Electronics attempted to enter the video console wars by pairing up with Nintendo to create an add on for the Super Nintendo. Long story short, the deal fell through and Philips was left with a $700 paperweight. Ouch. Nintendo did give CDi the right to make games featuring Nintendo characters. Those games, (three Zelda, one Mario) were some of the worst ever made. Double ouch.

Atari Jaguar

This blunder needs no introduction. Just the name ‘Atari Jaguar’ is synonymous with just about the biggest dud in video game history. In 1993, Atari re-entered the console business for the last time with the Jaguar. It was over priced, (why were all these terrible consoles $700?) hard for developers to make games for and had this controller that didn’t fit in the average person’s hands. Like Sega, Atari went back to just making games and left the console market for good.

This has just been a taste of the worst. Honorable mentions go to; Panasonic 3DO, Amiga C32, Nokia N-Gage, Neo-Geo and Gizmondo. Stay tuned.

Miyamoto Discusses Major Changes for Zelda

Posted by admin On May - 18 - 2010

In an interview with German gaming site Gaming Media (Japanese audio with German subtitles,) Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the new Zelda game that will be revealed at this year’s E3.

According to Miyamoto, when making a game, Nintendo traditionally creates a demo film and expands upon the ideas contained therein. However, for the new Zelda, the company first created the game mechanics and then made a demo video to match. He wouldn’t elaborate on the reason for the reversal.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Reaches 14.7 Million Sold

New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo Wii

Nintendo’s financial report for fiscal 2009 contained a number of newsworthy nuggets, including worldwide sales figures for some of the company’s biggest titles on the Nintendo Wii and DS.

New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo Wii moved an impressive 14.7 million copies across all territories since it launched in November. Meanwhile, Nintendo Wii Sports Resort sold 16.14 million units over the last year, and Nintendo Wii Fit Plus hit 12.65 million.

As for DS software, Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver lead the pack with a total 8.4 million units sold. Japan-only social sim Tomodachi Collection reached 3.2 million, while The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks landed at a respectable 2.61 million copies.

Lifetime DS Sales Surpass Game Boy

DSi XL

The Nintendo DS has taken another milestone step, according to the latest financial figures from the company. Its 2009 fiscal report today revealed that the DS has reached a life-to-date sales number of 128.89 million units. The number is significant because it marks the official passing of the Game Boy’s lifetime sales, which previously held the record for the best-selling handheld system. This was no doubt bolstered by 12.29 million units sold in the Americas alone during the year, which broke Nintendo’s own hardware sales records. Of course, Nintendo was helped along by releasing four different versions of the DS throughout its lifespan.

The DS software front also saw a nice bump, after titles like The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver joined the prestigious club of million-seller titles. For DS software, this brings the grand total of games that passed the million mark to 114, as compared with 91 at the close of last year’s fiscal results. Despite taking a dip in profits, Nintendo seems to be doing just fine.

It’s really easy to look at Rage, and think, “this is Id Software’s version of Fallout 3.” It’s a first-person game where the lone player emerges from a sheltered/protected society and wanders around a post-apocalyptic wasteland while talking with or shooting its mutated denizens. Heck, you can say that for Bethesda, Fallout is the post-apocalyptic RPG while Rage is the post-apocalyptic shooter.

Yet what stands out more, to me (besides just how damn smooth and amazing the game already looks), is the fact that Rage also echoes The Legend of Zelda, of all things. In the past, design director Matt Hooper has compared your car in Rage to Epona the horse in Zelda. But during a 45-minute demo (with commentary from both Hooper and creative director Tim Willitts), there are a lot of other hooks to Zelda. You use your car to zip around an overworld and then descend into “dungeons” for quests. Hooper comments, “in nearly every new environment, the player gets some new weapon or gizmo” — a very Zelda-like structural element. Heck, the wingstick is the Rage version of Link’s boomerang.

The Most Useless Video Game Items
When life gives you bananas, make banana-ade.

By Chris Plante

There are those moments when the music swells, you walk up to a chest, open it, and can’t help but deflate at the sheer crappiness of what’s inside. Not every item is created equal and we thought we’d take a look at some of the more worthless baubles throughout video game history.

17. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – Bee in a Jar
<!– System: Nintendo Wii | Release Date: 2009 | Publisher: Ubisoft –>

Bee in a Jar

You could place a whole host of handy things in jars in A Link to the Past. A bee is not one of those things. Instead of, say, a fairy, which could resurrect you upon death, a bee will just sorta fly around. Sometimes it attacks enemies, sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes it’ll sting you just for kicks. Not cool, bee. Worth noting there is a Golden Bee, which is way more handy and doesn’t fly away at the end of a battle, but we’d still rather have a fairy. She’s much hotter.
